We have expanded our offices to Airedale House in central Leeds to better service our clients and be closer to our supply chain. The brand new purpose built offices in the media hub of Leeds has excellent facilities and is part of our expansion as Barker Brooks launches new products in 2017.
The Barker Brooks expansion drive has begun with a recruitment drive for two immediate additional sales posts to help with both expanding sales and new product launches scheduled for 2017 and 2018.
It is planed that the Barker Brooks expansion will involve a strategic move of office and possible takeover in the very near future.
We really like promoting our own people. Seeing someone join the business, grow into their role, begin to take on more responsibility and actively start to give something of substance back is one of the most rewarding things about being involved here. When people deserve a promotion, it’s a pleasure to be able to oblige. The latest people to step up have been Alex Gray and Paul Bunce. Alex joined us as a salesperson, but it soon became clear that he had a broad commercial perspective and business acumen that could be put to better use – so rather than concentrating on a particular product, Alex has been working for some time now as our Head of Business Development. As you might expect, this involves getting out into the market, finding new opportunities, building new client relationships – in short, driving the future growth of the company. He’s already brought a couple of notable new clients on board, and is deeply involved in several other prospective new ventures. Paul, meanwhile, has impressed us so much with his drive and commitment that we’ve made him sales manager. It’s his job to oversee the sales team, monitoring, motivating, setting targets, shooting trouble and generally providing the oxygen that keeps the heart of the company beating. Paul’s first few weeks in his new role have been very successful, so let’s hope that’s a sign of things to come.
It’s shaping up to be another record year at the Yorkshire Legal Awards, taking place this year on 16 October at New Dock Hall in Leeds. With just over a fortnight left for nominations to be made, we’ve once again been seriously impressed with the quantity and quality of entries we’ve received. The entries represent the breadth and depth of the legal community in Yorkshire, from trainees to managing partners, from boutique niche firms to barristers’ chambers – and they all tell their own impressive and inspiring stories. While we don’t have any input in the judging process itself, on the strength of what we’ve seen so far we can certainly say that there are going to be some very worthy winners in 2014. Nevertheless, we’d urge anyone who hasn’t got round to entering to do so all the same: even if you think you have no chance of winning, the single biggest thing you can do to help your chances is to put a nomination in! Needless to say we’re all grown-up professionals here at BB, but every so often we find ourselves working on a project that brings out our inner-schoolchild.
That was very definitely the case when we met up with the League Managers Association a little while ago. (That’s ‘League’ as in ‘Football League’, in case you’re not familiar with them – the LMA is the official body representing all past and present league managers, from Sir Alex Ferguson to Jose Mourinho.)
Keeping a dispassionate business head on our shoulders wasn’t totally straightforward at our first meeting down at the stunning new FA headquarters at St George’s Park in Staffordshire, where the LMA are based. Boasting everything from state of the art fitness and spa facilities to an indoor grass pitch of the same dimensions as the one at Wembley and even an on-site Hilton hotel, St George’s Park is also covered with footballing memorabilia. Your eyes can’t help but wander the walls. That said, we had something very interesting to discuss.
The LMA are a proactive organisation who are keen to explore possible partnerships with corporate firms, and they offer unique, money-can’t-buy experiences in return. Would you like Harry Redknapp to oversee a 5-a-side tournament at FA HQ for firms you invite, hosting a private dinner and presenting the prizes at the end of the day? Or Arsene Wenger to explain statistical modelling to some of your top executives? That’s the kind of thing that can be arranged.
The LMA enjoy working with firms to craft something unforgettable. We’ve agreed that we’ll work with them to bring them together with prospective partners for major sponsorship arrangements, as well as selling tickets for a range of unique LMA events (Wembley boxes, annual dinners etc) with access to the managers themselves.
